Current Legal Status

Decriminalized in Multiple Cities

Psilocybin remains a Schedule I controlled substance under Michigan law. However, four cities have deprioritized enforcement. A statewide therapeutic access bill has been introduced in the Michigan Legislature.

Key Legislation

Ann Arbor City Council resolution (September 2020) — first Michigan city to deprioritize entheogen enforcement. Detroit resolution (2021). Hazel Park and Grand Rapids followed. SB 631 (2025) statewide therapeutic psilocybin services act introduced.

Decriminalization

Ann Arbor, Detroit, Hazel Park, and Grand Rapids have passed resolutions making psilocybin enforcement the lowest priority. Detroit's resolution is notable for its explicit equity and harm reduction framing.

Clinical Trials

University of Michigan has participated in psilocybin research. Check ClinicalTrials.gov for Detroit and Ann Arbor area enrolling studies.
