Social anxiety and psilocybin — what the research shows and personal reports

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most common anxiety disorders and it's notoriously treatment-resistant. Has anyone looked into psilocybin specifically for SAD? I see lots of posts about general anxiety but not much specifically about the social kind.
Psilocybin for SAD specifically is underresearched compared to treatment-resistant depression or PTSD. What we have: a UCSF phase 2 trial is ongoing (as of 2025). Small pilot data suggests significant reductions in social anxiety scores. Mechanistically it makes sense — 5-HT2A agonism reduces amygdala reactivity to social threats, and the mystical experience component may address the self-referential shame loops that characterize SAD.
Personal report: I've had severe social anxiety since adolescence. After two psilocybin sessions (2.5g and 3.5g, with integration therapy), the most noticeable change was reduced self-monitoring in social situations. The constant 'how am I coming across' background process became quieter. It's been 8 months and I can say the improvement has persisted — though I've also done significant therapy work in parallel. It's not a cure. It's a significant reduction.
Autism spectrum + social anxiety note: this combination requires extra caution. Some autistic individuals report that social anxiety reduction is the single most significant effect they've gotten from psilocybin. Others report increased sensory overwhelm during sessions that is difficult to manage. The population is not homogeneous and there's almost no research specifically on psilocybin in autistic adults. Proceed with care and ideally with a knowledgeable guide.
