I see Transkei described as 'beginner-friendly' but also 'above average potency.' Golden Teacher is described as 'the beginner's strain.' For someone new to cultivation who also wants a more substantial experience than the lowest potency options, which would people here actually recommend? I don't want to start with something that's going to be too challenging to grow but I also want more than 'mild.'

Transkei is genuinely beginner-friendly from a cultivation standpoint — as reliable as GT, maybe more so in warm environments. The potency difference is meaningful (above average vs average) but not dramatic. It's the right call if you want a step up from baseline without the cultivation complexity of a PE-lineage strain.

My take: start with Golden Teacher for the first grow regardless of potency preference. The reason isn't that GT is the only good beginner strain — it's that GT teaches you what correct colonization looks like, what healthy mycelium looks like, and what healthy fruiting bodies look like. Once you have that baseline, you can evaluate every subsequent grow against it. Transkei as the second or third strain is perfect.

The effects difference between GT and Transkei at equivalent doses is real but subtle. The bigger factor for your first experiences is knowing your specific batch's potency. Whatever you grow first: start at 1.5g, wait 90 minutes before deciding anything, and understand what you have before you go higher.
