Why Golden Teacher became the most popular beginner strain — and if that's still warranted

Golden Teacher has been the default beginner recommendation for probably two decades. Is that reputation still warranted in 2025, or have better beginner options emerged? What actually makes GT good for beginners beyond just tradition?
What Golden Teacher has going for it: very consistent colonization speed, high tolerance for humidity variation, flushes reliably, above-average pinning density, and forgiving of beginner technique. None of these are accidental — it's been selected for cultivability over decades.
The potency argument: GT is moderate potency, which is appropriate for beginners. A beginner who grows PE and then doses the same way they'd dose GT is going to have a much more intense experience than they expected. GT's moderate potency is a feature for first-time cultivators who are also first-time users.
Better options now? Uncle Ben's tek with any reasonably easy strain is probably the most forgiving entry point. If sticking with agar or PF Tek, GT or B+ are still the most beginner-friendly. The recommendation has held up because the underlying reasons for it are still true.
