Several people I know have reported improved sleep after psilocybin experiences. Is there research on this? I've also seen claims about psilocybin affecting REM sleep specifically. What's actually known?

There are a few small studies. One showed increased slow-wave sleep and altered REM structure the night after psilocybin administration. The sleep architecture changes appeared correlated with subjective measures of mystical experience quality. Small samples, preliminary, but genuinely interesting.

The anecdotal sleep improvement reports are more consistent than the research evidence. Many people report better sleep for weeks or months post-session. Whether this is direct pharmacological effect, reduced anxiety, improved affect, or something else is not established.

Acute effects (night of the experience): sleep is often disrupted. Psilocybin is not sedating and many people find they can't sleep for hours after the experience ends. The sleep improvements people report are post-acute — days to weeks later, not the same night.
