I'm planning to travel to access legal psilocybin services. Oregon is more established; Colorado's program is developing. What are the practical considerations for choosing between them?

Oregon is the clear choice right now for access to established, operational services. Oregon's program has been running since 2023; service centers have accumulated experience, the facilitator pool is larger, and the regulatory clarity is higher. If you want reliable access to a professionally supported session within the next few months, Oregon is the right answer. Portland, Bend, Eugene, and Ashland all have operating service centers.

Colorado's program isn't operational for licensed service centers as of early 2026, but Colorado does allow personal use and gifting of psilocybin and other natural psychedelics for adults 21+ — which Oregon does not. So if you're looking for community access outside of licensed settings, Colorado (particularly Denver) has a more permissive environment. Portland, for contrast, requires everything to go through a licensed service center.

Cost comparison: Oregon service center sessions range from $500–$2,500 depending on center, dose level, and preparation/integration included. Colorado's licensed services, when they open, will likely be in a similar range. Neither state has insurance coverage for psilocybin services. If cost is a major consideration, look for sliding scale options within Oregon centers — they exist but aren't always advertised prominently.
