I'm 63 and preparing for my first deliberate psilocybin experience. I've done some reading but most guides seem written for people half my age. Are there specific physiological, psychological, or practical considerations that are different for older adults?

Physiologically: most things that matter are medication interactions, not age itself. If you're on SSRIs, they blunt psilocybin effects significantly. If you're on lithium (seizure risk), beta-blockers, or MAOIs (serious interaction), those matter more. Psilocybin's cardiovascular effects — modest blood pressure and heart rate increase — are worth noting if you have cardiovascular history. The psychedelic experience itself is not age-limited; many profound experiences in the literature have occurred in people 60-80.

Psychologically: older adults often bring more life experience and a different relationship to mortality, meaning, and what matters. This can actually be an advantage. The Johns Hopkins cancer anxiety trials (many participants 50-80) produced some of the largest therapeutic effect sizes ever recorded. End-of-life anxiety, grief, and questions about meaning respond powerfully to psilocybin in this population.

Practical: make sure your set and setting account for physical comfort more deliberately. Comfortable temperature, easy bathroom access (logistics matter before, not usually during), comfortable reclining position. A sitter is particularly recommended for a first experience. Be honest with whoever is sitting for you about your health history so they know what they're monitoring for.
