Post-session depression or 'comedown' — what causes it and what helps

I've noticed that after my last two psilocybin sessions, I experienced a dip in mood about 3-5 days afterward. Not severe, but notable — a flatness that lasted a few days. I've heard this called a 'comedown' but psilocybin isn't supposed to have one. What's actually going on and what can I do about it?
What you're describing is real and documented — sometimes called the 'integration blues' rather than a chemical comedown. Unlike MDMA (which causes a genuine serotonin depletion-based depression), psilocybin's post-session low isn't from depletion. It's more likely: 1. The contrast effect — coming from a state of clarity and connection back into ordinary life feels flat 2. Emotional processing continuing as difficult material continues to surface 3. Sleep disruption carrying forward as fatigue
The serotonin depletion question: psilocybin does not deplete serotonin the way MDMA does. Psilocybin is an agonist (activates receptors) not a releaser. The low mood after sessions is not from reduced serotonin availability. This means the supplements that help with MDMA comedowns (5-HTP, magnesium) are not pharmacologically relevant for psilocybin — though some people find them helpful subjectively.
What actually helps: 1. Identify the dip as integration, not failure — it's the system processing 2. Rest more than usual in the first week 3. Gentle physical movement (walking, not intense exercise) 4. Connect with trusted people — isolation amplifies the flatness 5. Journal: the dip often has specific content if you look at it 6. Avoid alcohol in the integration period — it worsens emotional regulation and disrupts sleep
A pattern I've noticed: the post-session dip is worse when the session opened significant difficult material and I haven't had adequate support to process it. The dip is the unprocessed material looking for somewhere to go. Integration therapy — specifically having a place to talk about what happened — consistently shortens and reduces the severity of post-session lows for me.
