The most common beginner question: 'Can I start without a pressure cooker?' For PF Tek, technically yes — you can use a regular pot and boil the jars (pasteurization). But contamination rates are much higher and success rates are much lower without sterilization. A 6-quart Instant Pot does the job and costs ~$60. If you're serious about growing, it's the first equipment investment worth making.

Second most common beginner question: 'Is my mycelium contaminated or is that normal?' Normal mycelium is white to off-white and fuzzy. NOT normal: any green, black, pink, or orange color. Yellow/brown discoloration on grain is usually metabolite secretion — often normal. When in doubt: don't open the jar. If it smells normal when you very carefully sniff near the port, it's probably fine. If it smells sour, yeasty, or rotten, it's contaminated.

Third: 'Can I reuse jars between runs?' Yes, but thoroughly clean them. Remove all old substrate, wash with soap and hot water, rinse well, and allow to dry completely before re-use. You don't need to sterilize the jar itself between runs — the pressure cooking step sterilizes the contents in the jar. Inspect jars for cracks or chips before reuse — contamination can hide in scratches.
