I've done psilocybin several times and I'm curious about ayahuasca. Beyond the obvious differences (ceremony, setting, duration), how are the experiences actually different? What should I understand about ayahuasca specifically before considering it?

Ayahuasca contains DMT plus MAOIs that allow oral activity. The MAOI component means serious drug interaction risks that psilocybin doesn't have — you need to be on a strict diet and check all medications and supplements. Psilocybin's interaction profile is simpler.

Experiential differences: ayahuasca tends to be more externally visual, more purgative (physical), and more narratively structured — stories, entities, themes that feel archetypal. Psilocybin tends to be more internally emotional and introspective. Obviously highly individual, but this is a pattern many people report.

The ceremonial container in traditional ayahuasca use is sophisticated and specifically designed for the experience. Indigenous traditions have centuries of practice managing the ceremonial space. Working with legitimate traditional practitioners is different from taking ayahuasca outside that container. Both are legitimate; they're different things.
