Psilocybin and sleep — the night after a session
22 replies · General Discussion
Every time I do psilocybin I can't sleep that night. I'm exhausted but my mind is still going. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about it, and does it affect the integration?
Very common. Psilocybin significantly suppresses REM sleep for the night of the session and sometimes the following night. The neurological activation from a full session takes time to settle. This is a well-documented effect — not a problem with your metabolism or dose, just the pharmacological reality. The mind continuing to process for hours after the experience ends is also expected — the session doesn't end when the effects fade.
Practical approaches: don't fight it. Keep low lighting, have a journal available, listen to calm music or nature sounds. The material arising in those late-night hours is often part of the integration — some people report their most important insights come in the hours after the peak, not during it. Avoid bright screens. Melatonin (3–5mg) can help initiate sleep without interfering with the post-session state. Avoid benzodiazepines unless necessary — they suppress the continued processing that's happening.
The research on sleep and integration: some evidence that the REM suppression on the session night is followed by REM rebound in subsequent nights — vivid dreams, unusual dream content. Many people find their dreams in the week after a session are more vivid and emotionally rich. Keep a dream journal for at least a week post-session — the material can be directly related to what was worked on.
